    When hearing the word liver damage, our minds go straight to alcohol or prescription drugs. But what if the real culprits are not in the shadows but in clear sight—on your plate, inside your fridge and even in a lunchbox?

    1. Fructose-Heavy Foods: Sweet, Sneaky, and Slippery

    Fructose might sound innocent considering how it’s naturally found in fruits, but the truth is that the concentrated fructose added in several modern goods is causing problems with your metabolism.

    The high-fructose corn syrup included in sodas, energy drinks, cereal, candy and even “low-fat yoghurts” is the hidden evil among the goodness. 

    When consumed in large amounts, liver has to either convert it to glucose or fat. While glucose is used up for energy in most of the body, fructose usually ends up on the liver’s mission list. 

    When liver becomes overloaded, it starts converting fructose into fat ,hence causing non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). You may not experience symptoms right away, but with the passage of time it can appear in forms of inflammation, insulin resistance and even liver scarring.

    A quick tip is to replace all kinds of processed sweets with whole foods. The fibre in foods reduces sugar absorption and provides the liver a well-deserved break.

    Here we are talking about the slow bombs ticking in your pantry. These are oils like sunflower,  cottonseed, canola, soybean and corn. The oils that are a part of your friend foods, salad dressing and packaged snacks must be cheap and convenient, but are not considered so heart-friendly. On top of it, they are loaded with omega 6 fatty acids, and the treatment with extreme conditions of heat and pressure makes them prone to oxidation. 

    Oxidised oil in return produces free radicals, which are the main source of oxidative stress in the body. And as you guessed, the front and centre organ that has to detoxify all junk, the liver, is affected by this stress, which causes inflammation leading to fatty liver disease.

    A better option is to choose healthy fats like avocado oil or olive oil. Not just do they taste better, but keep your metabolism in balance.

    3. Fruit Juice: Health Halo with a Dark Side

    We have all been fooled by the “100% fruit juice” for years, thinking it’s all about vitamins, hydration, natural sugars and everything nice. Well, that’s not entirely true.

    Firstly, when fruit is juiced, it is extracted of its fibre and leaves behind a concentrated sugar blast for customers to consume. Secondly, packaged juice always comes with additives like preservatives and artificial sugars, which hit your liver as hard as soda cans.

    The fresh glass of orange juice contains as much sugar as in a candy bar, and spikes your blood sugar, leaving your liver to deal with the excessive fructose.

    Instead of drinking them, it’s better to eat whole foods, and if you’re craving a fresh glass of juice, simply dilute it with water.

    While your liver filters blood, detoxifies waste, produces proteins and metabolises nutrients, you can pay it back by eating healthy and avoiding a sugar rush for it to deal with. It’s built like a 24/7 machine that doesn’t complain but presents itself only when it’s entirely busted.

    By cutting back on fructose, you can do a huge favour to your liver and give it a chance to thrive in your body. Cutting out industrial seed oil, sugary juice, and fructose will help greatly in preventing liver damage.
